CORTONA AND SURROUNDINGS
DISCOVER THE HEART OF TUSCANY
One of the most charming and funny way to discover Tuscany and the Cortona area is to spend an unforgettable day discovering the food and the wines of this beautiful land, tasting and comparing various kind of wines with their personality, tradition, production and history.
Cortona is a small wine-producing town perched on the hills of eastern Tuscany, on a spectacular hilltop overlooking the Valdichiana valley from where people can enjoy stunning views of Lake Trasimeno and Monte Amiata. Here, the hills and plains provide with a good mesoclimate for the grape growing. Sunshine is abundant on the southwest facing slopes, giving excellent ripening opportunities throughout the day. This is tempered by cooling influences at night, brought about by the area’s altitude (Cortona is nearly 600 mt above the sea level). This slows the development of sugars and phenols overnight, leading to a retention of acidity and consequently balanced wines. Absorbent clay-based soils provide plenty of hydration for grapes in dry summer periods. Cortona has a long and illustrious viticultural history beginning with the Etruscans and growing up during the centuries. The red wines are headed by Syrah, which makes up the majority of the region’s plantings, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon, Gamay, Merlot, Pinot Nero and local Tuscan hero Sangiovese. Whites favor Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling Italico (Welschriesling) and natives Grechetto and Pinot Bianco. In 2000 Cortona established Cortona DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), which has 29 members that produce and control 14 different types of wines. The Cortona Doc is one of the most appreciated wine expressions at national and international levels and thanks to the passion and the experience of its wine makers, its fame and its quality is growing up day by day.
